b. 1995

Lewis Brander was born in London in 1995. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College graduating in 2018, before moving to Athens, Greece. In 2021 Brander returned to London, and in July-August 2022, he had his first solo exhibition with Vardaxoglou Gallery. His practice is concerned with the natural landscapes of cities, capturing the light and cloud formations of London and Athens in particular. Extending over a number of years, these deep observations embody the essence of memory and emotion to create a semi-abstract visual language. Brander often provides context for his depictions of atmospheric conditions with a horizon line, offering a hint of the subject while providing a sense of distance. Each painting is intimate in format, and the artist's careful gestures reveal the presence of the subject. As a landscape artist, Brander understands the tradition of this genre and uses his works as a conduit to explore the natural world and the places we inhabit today. His paintings are not only a tribute to the history of landscape painting but also an expression of reverence for the natural world. The artist’s work is in a number of collections, including The David Ross Collection, The Private Collection of Victoria Miro, and The Ian Roper-Taylor Collection, among others.
